Former Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu has been confirmed as part of Fox Sports’ coverage team for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America.
In doing so he has extended his growing reputation as one of the leading American football voices in football broadcasting.
The 40-year-old will work alongside Sky Sports’ SPFL commentator Ian Crocker and former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves as part of Fox’s tournament coverage.
New role for former Ranger Maurice Edu
Edu earned 46 caps for the United States national team and scored once, building a strong international career alongside his club journey which eventually took him into Rangers stardom.
Before arriving at Rangers, he began his professional career with Canadian side Toronto in MLS, before making a £2.6 million move to Ibrox in 2008.
His time in Glasgow proved successful, making 125 appearances and scoring 12 goals, while winning three league titles, a Scottish Cup in 2009 and two League Cups.
Old Firm hero
One of his most iconic moments came with a stoppage-time winner against Celtic in 2010, a goal that remains a standout memory for supporters.
He worked under legendary Ibrox boss Walter Smith, who was on the sidelines for that famous moment.
“I watch the video of that Celtic game now sometimes just to look at Walter’s reaction to my goal,” he told the Rangers Review in 2021.
Maurice Edu remembers Walter Smith
He also reflected on Walter’s impact as a man not just a manager.
“What a special man he was. The word legend gets thrown around too much in football but that’s what he was.
“He epitomised what the club meant to so many people.”
“When he passed you saw what he meant not just from a Scottish standpoint but from a global one.
“What an impact he had, I am so proud that he thought enough of me to sign me for Rangers.
“He never once looked at me like an asset to Rangers; he spoke to me like a man.
“There were times when I would ask to go home to see my family in the States if I was getting homesick and he’d help because he had this empathy for you.”
Edu remained at Rangers following the club’s financial collapse but did not feature in Third Division football, instead moving to Stoke City in 2012, a transfer he once described as a “dream come true.”
Back in the USA
However, it would not work out for ‘Big Mo’ in England.
He would return to the United States with Philadelphia Union before retirement.
Now a regular broadcaster across Apple TV, Fox and CBS, Edu has developed into a prominent media figure.
Looking ahead to the World Cup, he also offered his view on the United States squad and the pressure surrounding them.
“At the moment, the fan base is very emotional,” he explained.
“There’s an expectation for this group of players. There’s an expectation for a home World Cup.”
He also had his say on the inclusion of Gio Reyna, the son of fellow ex-Ranger Claudio in recent squads.
“Some people will say it’s not warranted based on how much he’s playing at his club level,” he admitted.
“But if you’re asking me to make the decision between bringing another attacking player who has game-changing ability.
“I’d roll the dice, and I’d probably do it.”
Edu’s appointment reinforces his growing standing in global football media.
While his Rangers connection remains a defining part of his career, particularly under the late, great Smith, whom he continues to credit as a major influence.
