  • Rydnn McGuire impressing at Rangers youth level with award-winning season and senior squad involvement.
  • Contract uncertainty raises interest from England despite strong development and standout statistics.
  • Emerging alongside Scotland’s goalkeeping issues as potential long-term national team solution.

Rangers have moved to secure the futures of several of their most promising academy prospects, but one of the most intriguing talents at the club could still be on his way out this summer.

The one who may get away could also be the one who could represent part of the solution to a growing problem for Scotland.

Kyle Glasgow, Ashton Scally and Luca Rankin have all committed their long-term futures to Rangers in recent months amid interest from English clubs.

There is a growing sense that a group of young talents is beginning to emerge at Ibrox ready to impact the first team.

Findlay Curtis, for example, made his breakthrough in the first half of the season before heading to Kilmarnock on loan in January.

Rydnn McGuire set to depart

However, 17-year-old goalkeeper Rydnn McGuire remains in a different position.

Despite signing his first full time deal only last January, that contract is set to expire this summer. Interest from England is building, with Everton reported to have seen a £1 million bid rejected for the Scotland Under 19 international.

McGuire’s development this season has been significant.

He recently became the first goalkeeper to win Rangers’ Academy Player of the Year award, underlining his impact at youth level.

He also travelled with Danny Rohl’s first team to Spain for the recent training camp.

An impressive campaign

The numbers reflect that progress.

He has featured in 25 matches for Rangers Under 19s, including appearances in the Challenge Cup against senior opposition.

He has also been included in multiple first team matchday squads and has now overtaken Kieran Wright as the club’s third choice goalkeeper.

Across the campaign, he has recorded 10 penalty saves and seven clean sheets, a return that highlights both his shot stopping ability and composure in high pressure moments.

The Scotland solution?

His emergence comes at a time when Scotland’s goalkeeping situation is under increasing scrutiny.

As things stand, the national team are heading into the next major tournament cycle relying on a group short of regular high-level minutes.

Angus Gunn is currently third choice at Nottingham Forest, Liam Kelly is second choice at Rangers, while Craig Gordon, now 43, has struggled for consistent fitness this season with Premiership leaders Hearts.

Scott Bain is one of the few Scottish goalkeepers playing regularly this season, featuring for Falkirk.

It marks a clear shift from previous generations.

Scotland once had the luxury of choosing between established first team goalkeepers performing at a high level, with Craig Gordon, Allan McGregor and David Marshall all competing for the jersey.

Earlier still, Jim Leighton and Andy Goram defined an era of strength in depth in the nineties.

That level of competition is no longer there, but there are signs that a new generation is beginning to develop.

McGuire is one of the standout names, but he is not alone.

Callan McKenna at Bournemouth is another young goalkeeper attracting attention.

He gained early first team experience with Queen’s Park at just 16 before making his move to England.

This shows the benefit of first team action at a young age.

For Scotland, that is the key.

Goalkeepers often develop later, but the modern game demands earlier exposure, stronger distribution, and greater composure under pressure.

McGuire’s involvement in senior environments, combined with his performances at youth level, suggests he is developing along those lines.

His next move will be crucial.

Whether he remains at Rangers or moves elsewhere, regular football and continued progression will determine whether he can fulfil that potential.

Rangers are linked with Sheffield Wednesday stopper Pierce Charles to replace Jack Butland this summer.

Meaning the pathway to the Gers starting XI may be blocked for the foreseeable future.

Scotland’s goalkeeping issue will not be solved overnight.

However, the emergence of players like McGuire offers a level of optimism that has been missing in recent years.

If the pathway is managed correctly, he could yet become exactly what Scotland have been lacking.
