Danny Rohl set for big calls as six Rangers players near contract expiry

Rangers have six first-team players who are out of contract this summer ahead of Danny Rohl’s first summer window in charge.

With the German head coach set to continue rebuilding his squad, he will need to either tie up these players or show them the door.

He has already secured the services of Scotland defender John Souttar for another year.

But will any more players be given extended Ibrox deals?

James Tavernier

The captain has been a superb servant to Rangers throughout some turbulent years.

Now entering the final six weeks of his contract, he is expected to depart Ibrox after a decade of service this summer.

Tavernier revealed there had been “talks behind the scenes” regarding his future in January, but did not disclaim which direction those discussions had gone in.

Rohl also discussed the skippers future in February.

“He knows our schedule and then we will come to a point where we make a decision,” he explained.

“But let’s carry on and I think this is also helpful for him.

“He should enjoy at this age to be the captain of this group, and stick together to go in the right direction.

“I think we need him as a leader.”

Liam Kelly

Rangers second-choice goalkeeper, Liam Kelly returned to the club he started his career at in summer 2024.

He did manage to displace Jack Butland towards the end of last season.

This was amid a run of mistakes from the former England stopper.

However, Butland has reclaimed his spot as number one this season under both Russell Martin and Rohl.

The 30-year-old has previously been first-choice for Livingston and Motherwell in the Premiership.

He has however, been limited to only three matches this season, with no league outings.

The Daily Record reported in March that he was set to be offered a new deal, but no announcement has been made at this stage.

Former interim Ibrox boss Barry Ferguson has also claimed Kelly has already accepted a one-year extension.

It remains to be seen via any official channels whether the Scotland international will remain on the Rangers bench or depart in search of a starting berth.

Kieran Wright

Now onto Rangers third-choice pick between the sticks.

Kieran Wright is a graduate of the Ibrox youth system but has never appeared for the club in a first-team match.

Now 26, time is surely up for his spell at the club if he wants to forge a career beyond a backup.

He has racked up more than 80 appearances across several loan spells from non-league to the Premiership.

During a loan with Airdrieonians, he was praised by their goalkeeping coach David Hutton.

“He’s good with his feet, and a great shot-stopper,” he said.

“You don’t spend that long at Rangers if you haven’t got a bit about you!”

However, with teenager Rydnn McGuire now seemingly preferred as the third keeper on matchdays, his time at Ibrox looks to be over, despite his helping towards Rangers’ European home-grown quotas.

Bailey Rice

A tough decision for Rohl this summer is on the future of midfielder Bailey Rice.

The 19-year-old was signed in 2022 from Motherwell, having been part of their youth midfield duo alongside Lennon Miller.

However, nearly four years on he is yet to make the breakthrough into the Ibrox first team.

He has made 16 appearances for Rangers, including a solid showing away to Manchester United in the Europa League last season.

He was praised by former Red Devils defender Rio Ferdinand on that occasion.

“I’ll tell you what. I like Rice,” he said on commentary for TNT Sports.

“He’s come on and looking composed and that left foot looks like it has a bit in it.

“He’s seeing pictures, playing and executing.”

On Rice’s future, Rohl said: “I think it’s now at the stage where he must first come back after the big injury. He is working hard in this case.

“Then we make a decision from our side.”

Ben Davies

Former Liverpool defender Ben Davies is currently out-on-loan from Ibrox with English side Oxford United.

He has spent four years with Rangers but has never overly impressed and will surely depart in the summer when his deal ends.

Leon King

The same applies to former youth prospect Leon King, who will also surely end his Rangers career upon completion of his loan to Ayr United.

King made his debut at just 16 under Steven Gerrard and collected a Premiership winners’ medal in 2021.

His Ibrox career fell away in subsequent years and he never fully recovered from his dismal 2022 Champions’ League campaign.

The former Scotland U21 defender previously expressed his desire to remain at Somerset Park.

“I would like to stay here and continue playing if I can and then kick on from there and see where it takes me.”

Tavernier’s situation stands out as the most significant.

The captain is into the final weeks of his deal after a decade of service, with Rohl previously acknowledging his leadership importance but indicating a decision would come at season’s end.

With John Souttar already secured on a new deal, Rangers have at least begun future planning.

However, Rohl now faces a series of defining calls that will shape his first summer window in charge and determine the next phase of the club’s rebuild at Ibrox.
