Rangers defender Tuur Rommens insists he has a “winner’s mentality” as pressure continues to build on the Ibrox side ahead of Sunday’s crucial clash with Celtic.

The Belgian full-back, who arrived from Westerlo in January, spoke openly about his mentality and ambitions after a difficult couple of weeks for the Gers.

Back-to-back defeats against Motherwell and Hearts have left Danny Rohl‘s side seven points behind the Jambos in the title race with only three matches remaining.

That leaves Sunday’s trip to Celtic Park carrying major significance.

Rangers head into the latest Old Firm encounter sitting four points behind Martin O’Neill’s side.

However, a victory would damage Celtic’s own title hopes while also reviving their own push for a second place finish and a Champions League qualifying spot.

And Rommens believes mentality is critical.

“I always try to win, and I have this winner’s mentality,” he said.

Glasgow connection in Belgium

The 23-year-old also revealed former Rangers coach Issame Charai played a major role in convincing him to make the move to Glasgow.

Charai, who previously worked at Rangers under Philippe Clement before leaving alongside the Belgian coaching staff last year was Rommens boss at Westerlo.

He recommended the transfer during discussions in January.

“When it was almost done in the winter, I spoke with him and he said it was the perfect club for me to go to, to develop myself more,” Rommens explained.

“Glasgow is a beautiful city, very friendly people, all positive things.

“You want to make something of your career, so you need to get out and I think this is the perfect club for me.

“The style of play suits me.”

Tuur Rommens international intentions

Rommens admitted adapting to Scottish football has come with challenges, including the weather and understanding the accent, but says the support around the club has made the transition easier.

“A lot of rain,” he joked.

“But I think the people are very friendly. Everybody says hello.

“In Belgium, everybody’s more on his own, but here everybody helps you.”

The defender also believes Rangers can provide the platform to elevate his international ambitions with Belgium.

“It’s very hard to go into the Belgian squad from Westerlo,” he said.

“I think this is easier because you get more exposure.

“But you still need to perform, so it’s a goal of mine to go in the squad.”

Rommens has already made an encouraging impression at Ibrox despite an injury setback interrupting his momentum.

“It was very frustrating to be on the sidelines for three games now,” he added.

He made his return as a second-half substitute at Tynecastle but could not rescue his side from defeat.

He is now hoping to start against Celtic on Sunday.

With Rangers’ mentality under scrutiny after recent results, the timing of Rommens’ comments will resonate with supporters demanding a response in the season-defining trip across Glasgow this weekend.
