- Rangers are in discussions with James Tavernier over a final farewell with the club
- Andrew Cavenagh revealed the dialogue, but there was no indication that a testimonial had been granted
- The incidents of last week change the situation, so it remains to be seen what the outgoing captain wants
Andrew Cavenagh has detailed that Rangers are in dialogue with the representatives of James Tavernier over a final farewell.
The chairman spoke about the debacle that unfolded last midweek when the outgoing club captain was omitted from the starting line-up for the defeat to Hibs.
Rohl provided his perspective after the game, and then responded to the statement that was circulated by Tav on social media.
Cavenagh has now revealed that a final farewell could be in the offing.
What are the negotiations between Rangers and James Tavernier?
The game against Hibs was supposed to represent his bow at Rangers.
The skipper envisaged leading the team out for one last time in a competitive game, with his kids as mascots, but that did not transpire, to put it lightly.
Talk of a testimonial had been tumbling on in the background, and that may still materialise, but the events of the last week have changed the landscape.
Clearly, the club is still open to giving James Tavernier his place and the space for a more fitting final goodbye, so it will be interesting to see what the response is.
Andrew Cavenagh gave his view on the embarrassing “black eye” that was self-inflicted at Ibrox last week, but he went on to reveal the talks with Tav’s camp.
“We’re not blind. Wednesday was not a good look for anybody. No one came out of that looking positive. And we would always look to put the club first.
“But none of that changes how Tav’s legacy, none of that changes our opinion of Tav. From my perspective, it’s water under the bridge and we’re moving forward. We will continue to celebrate Tav’s history and we will have a great relationship with Tav going forward.”
Should all have been kept behind closed doors
It was noted by many that the club did not publicise the exchange and presentation between John Greig and Tavernier before the Hibs game, presumably leaving that for what could follow.
“I think we would all look back and wish the outcome was different from the way it was, but I don’t want to get into too many details because what I just said is what I mean – this should all have been kept behind closed doors and not have spilt out into the public because it’s a black eye for the club.
“We’ll put a line under it and move forward in a positive way,” added Cavenagh.
“Again, Tav is a hall of famer who deserves to be celebrated and we’re talking to his team about what the right way is to do that. But there is nothing but positivity about Tav’s time here.”
