Rangers have been named among the clubs to have made enquiries for Sandefjord centre-back Zinedin Smajlovic, while Celtic have reportedly submitted an improved offer for the 22-year-old Sweden youth international.
Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has reported that Celtic’s latest proposal is worth €4.5million fixed, plus €2million in bonuses, with Sandefjord under no pressure to sell because Rangers, Olympiacos, Hull City, Fenerbahce, Toulouse, Feyenoord and Lyon are also tracking the defender.
That puts a clear Old Firm edge on the race. Rangers’ reported interest comes as Derek McInnes starts shaping a squad that needs more athleticism and depth, particularly through the spine, before his first competitive match in charge at Dundee United on July 31.
Why Smajlovic fits the summer watchlist
Smajlovic is a 6ft 3in left-footed centre-back who joined Sandefjord from Sandviken and is under contract in Norway until 2028. His profile is obvious: young, physically strong, comfortable enough on the ball to attract several recruitment-led clubs, and already capped by Sweden at under-21 level.
The key point for Rangers is whether an enquiry becomes a bid. Celtic’s improved offer may force the pace, but the volume of named interest gives Sandefjord leverage and leaves the next move with the selling club. For now, Galetti’s Smajlovic update makes this a live transfer situation worth watching closely at Ibrox.
