Rangers have commenced talks with Coventry City over a potential loan deal for Jahnoah Markelo, with the winger not part of Frank Lampard’s plans for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
The 23-year-old Amsterdam-born player arrived in the West Midlands in January, having made his breakthrough with FC Zurich in Switzerland.
Having made just five substitute appearances for the Sky Blues last season, as Lampard’s men marched to the Championship title, the winger remains something of an unknown quanity in England.
Enter Rangers interest.

The Coventry Telegraph’s resident CCFC writer Andy Turner has commented on the speculation surrounding Jahnoah Markelo, and now we know that it carries substance.
“Social media is awash with rumours that Rangers are keen on taking the winger on a season-long loan. The 23-year-old only signed for the Sky Blues from FC Zurich in January and has barely kicked a ball since.
“CoventryLive verdict: A season-long loan at a decent level makes perfect sense for Markelo in terms of his development.
“Having not made an impact at City during the second half of last season, it is unlikely that Frank Lampard feels that he’s ready to be pitched in to the Premier League.”
Since the remarks were made by Turner, Sky Sports and the Rangers Review have reported on the approach from Ibrox.
Rangers need proven quality on the right wing
Rangers boss Derek McInnes is on the record on the need to recruit difference makers to lift his team to the next level.
He needs to bring in proven quality. That is not Markelo.
Now, he looks to have impressive credentials and has clearly done well in Zurich, but not much else to date.
This type of signing would have to be followed by a player of greater quality, and there is space for it.
We know McInnes wants to deploy an inverted, left-footer on the right wing but Djeidi Gassama and Oliver Antman are not cutting it. Both could be out of the picture by the end of the transfer window.
Rangers need quality and a greater ambition than solely signing Jahnoah Markelo on loan from Coventry City.
