Olwethu Makhanya provides perfect introduction – now he needs to show it on the pitch

After completing his transfer from Philadelphia Union to Rangers, Olwethu Makhanya has provided a perfect introduction of his qualities as a player.

If all clearances are received, the South Africa international defender will be in the squad for tomorrow evening’s Scottish Premiership opener against Dundee United at Tannadice.

As things stand, most would expect Manny Fernandez and Ben Godfrey to line up in the heart of defence for Rangers, but Makhanya has stated that he is “really excited and can’t wait to get started”.

Rapid rise over the last three years for Olwethu Makhanya

Olwethu Makhanya made his breakthrough at Stellenbosch in his native South Africa as a teenager, and within a year, had impressed enough to win a move to MLS.

Initially, he was part of the Union’s second-string but his progress was recognised with a fast-track promotion to the senior squad and he would go on to make 42 appearances for the Pennsylvania-based franchise.

Makhanya made his debut for South Africa earlier this year and was an unusued substitute for the Bafana, Bafana all through the 2026 World Cup.

The player has long held an ambition to ply his trade in Europe and now he can realise his dream.

Speaking to Rangers TV, the 22-year-old made his enthusiasm clear, as he gets ready to challenge for a place in the team.

Comfortable, quick, strong – Makhanya

Olwethu Makhanya described his style in favourable terms, when asked what type of player he was:

“I like to describe myself as a composed centre-back, I like keeping the ball, I’m very comfortable on the ball, I’m quick, strong and I can be physical if the game demands that from me.

“I am really excited and I can’t wait to get started.”

That is a perfect introduction that we hope can be backed up on the pitch when the action starts.

Makhanya won’t be the last defensive reinforcement to arrive in this window with at least one more option to follow for Derek McInnes.

The South African comes from a decent level in MLS, but he hasn’t played a lot of first team football to date, partly due to his age.

Further development will be required, but this is a player who is keen – and able – to contribute immediately.
