On the eve of the new Scottish Premiership campaign, Derek McInnes has completed eight summer signings, but the latest Rangers transfer news provides encouragement for the fans.

The new arrivals are as follows:

Ivor Pandur, Ross McCrorie, Ben Godfrey, Olwethu Makhanya, Dan Neil, Cammy Devlin, Vanja Dragojevic and Lawrence Shankland, the new club captain.

The squad should be in a better position by now, but the first-choice starting 11 still requires quality – and numbers when it comes to wingers.

Rangers’ squad lacks balance at start of season

The team is still a couple of defenders short, while the group is stacked in midfield.

Up front, we’re adequately covered, but where does the chance creation come from? Who will provide the incision from wide when it matters, or show their individual quality?

The game-changers are sorely lacking, and Derek McInnes has effectively acknowledged that.

After Oliver Antman’s departure, Rangers’ remaining wingers are Findlay Curtis and Djeidi Gassama. That’s it.

Thelo Aasgaard can and will operate from the left at times, while Mo Diomande is primed to start again, against Dundee United.

He is by no means a winger, but his left foot provides the blance sought by McInnes. The Ivorian playing in that inverted role puts more impetus on the right-back to attack and create, but until proper wide options arrive, Dujon Sterling and Ross McCrorie will have to carry that burden.

Rangers transfer news latest

The good news is that further reinforcements are on the way.

After Olwethu Makhanya arrived on Thursday, Rangers Review’s Chris Jack revealed that two more defenders are being targeted.

Crucially, two right wingers are sought, with at least one who can operate on both flanks.

Derek McInnes is putting sturdy foundations in place, but unless the all-important final pieces are added, this body of work will be susceptible to damage.

The easy part is setting out the plan – now the challenge is finding the right players ready to make a difference.
