Rangers boss Derek McInnes sounded the alarm on the need for urgent reinforcements after the 1-1 draw with Dundee United on Friday.
Rangers failed to win in the opening game of the Scottish Premiership season for the fourth year running, and that deeply frustrated the manager.
He was honest in his assessment of the game, feeling that his side didn’t do enough to win the game, but in his remarks to the press he made it clear – and very public – that new signings are required immediately.
Those required aren’t numbers or options for the sake of it. McInnes’ team is far from complete and sorely lacking in quality from middle to front.
It’s clear, obvious and needs addressing. Only those ‘game changers’ that were previously referenced will change the situation and the prospects for the team.
New signings need to land – Derek McInnes
While Rangers are expecting to be engaged in the transfer market until the window closes in early September, that has to be balanced with the need for action now, and the important games that lie ahead in August.
Derek McInnes reflected this perspective after the stalemate in Dundee.
“I know the evidence today would suggest we’ve still got loads and loads to do, and I get that, but I do think we have got enough to be encouraged about.
“But the new signings need to land pretty soon – I need to say that.
“Everybody’s worked hard to get the right players in, and I appreciate the effort that’s been made, but we’ve got important games, important league games, important European games, and we’re just really trying to crank that up to try and get players in the building as quickly as possible.”
There it is. McInnes wasn’t holding back, and the onus is now firmly on those at the club to get the required business concluded.
Rangers still short in different areas
At least two wingers are required, ideally three, with another option in the middle. Rangers’ midfield is stacked, but we’re yet to see a player who can control a game, or penetrate like a classic number eight.
Numbers are still required in defence, right across the back line.
There are questions at right-back while Tuur Rommens needs competition on the other side.
Olwethu Makhanya has arrived, but further support is still needed at Centre back. He is said to be doubtful for the trip to Poland for Europa League action due to a Visa issue, and with Ben Godfrey forced off the pitch at Tannadice, that could create a mini crisis and one that should have been avoided.
The clock is ticking.
