Rangers could face potential Northern Irish Europa League decider – Conference League path also revealed today

Rangers players in Europa League action ahead of a possible Northern Irish opponent

Rangers could face a Europa League decider against Larne in Northern Ireland after the draw was made for the Playoff Round.

First of all, Derek McInnes’ team needs to find their way past Jagiellonia Bialystok, with the first leg of the third qualifying round to take place on Thursday.

The draw for the next round was made within the last hour and now the potential opponents are known.

Northern Ireland champions Larne or Iberia Tbilisi of Georgia await in the Europa League Playoff Round.

Should Rangers fail to proceed in the Europa League, they would drop down into the Conference League Playoff round.

That draw takes place at 1pm UK time.

Rangers’ Europa League Playoff Round Opponents

With the draw separated into ‘groups’ ahead of the draw, Rangers four potential opponents in the Europa League were as follows:

  • Larne (NIR) or Iberia 1999 Tbilisi (GEO)
  • Lillestrom (NOR)
  • Levski Sofia (BUL) or Kairat Almaty (KAZ)
  • Mjallby (SWE) or Slovan Bratislava (SVK)

Larne or Iberia Tbilisi should present a favourable last hurdle before the Europa League proper, and as much as nothing can be taken for granted, you would hope that Rangers could take full advantage.

The pick of those ties would be Larne FC.

The Inver Reds would be a great opponent for Rangers, given the close proximity to Scotland, and the significant fanbase in the Province.

That is a nice prospect, but there are still four games of football to be played. Let’s see what unfolds.

Rangers’ potential Conference League opponents

Should Rangers drop into the Europa Conference League, they will play one of the following teams:

  • Jablonec (Cze) or RFS (LVA)
  • Zalgiris (LTU) or Hajduk Split (CRO)
  • Brann (NOR) or Apollon Limassol (CYP)
  • Inter Turku (FIN) or Vaduz (LIE)
  • Noah (ARM) or Sion (SUI)

UEFA’s third-tier competition isn’t where Rangers want to be, as much as it opens up a new front on the pitch. Let’s not go there just yet.
