Rangers needed further quality before the Hibs game on Sunday, but the bitterly disappointing loss amplified that requirement.
With the fans still hurting and wondering what happens next, the transfer activity has been stepped up, with Monday bringing updates on Rangers transfer news.
The moves for Couhaib Driouech, Kosta Nedeljkovic and James Penrice are all at different stages, but crucially, two key roles will be covered.
Rangers closing in on bid for Driouech
Rangers are said to have agreed a fee with PSV for the transfer of Couhaib Driouech.
If that deal is concluded, the left-winger will come to Ibrox as a first-choice player, with Findlay Curtis and Djeidi Gassama as back-up.
It is so important that he makes a big impact, and the sooner the better, but the immediate priority is to see the Moroccan with the bar scarf above his head.
Rangers transfer news – Kosta Nedeljkovic approach
A senior Serbian international player with experience in and around the Premier League and the Bundesliga. Sounds alright!
Rangers need a better option at right back – a player who can really contribute going forward and make his presence felt in tandem with an inverted winger.
On the basis of what we’ve seen so far, Dujon Sterling and Ross McCrorie aren’t quite up to the standard required. It may be time to try and move on Sterling, while McCrorie will provide cover across the back line as required.
The Rangers Review has reported this afternoon that talks have been held with Aston Villa, but the Serbian is “not understood to be the only right-back under consideration”.
James Penrice coming home to Scotland to Rangers?
James Penrice would be a smart signing, given his age, nationality and ability.
He should have improved from his time in Greece with AEK, but he is now surplus to requirements.
It has been reported that the Athens-based club are holding out for a permanent deal, while Rangers want a loan with obligations, but there will be scope for that one to be worked out if it’s decided that the 27-year-old is the man to compete with Tuur Rommens.
After Andrew Cavenagh detailed that a further three to five players would come into the club in this window, the business is continuing at a rapid pace.
The next confirmed update on Rangers transfer news won’t be far away.
