Vice-captain Dan Neil has insisted Rangers’ defensive problems are “not unfixable”, speaking after Thursday’s Europa League exit at Ibrox.
The midfielder was reacting to a 1-1 draw with Jagiellonia Bialystok that sent the Gers out 3-2 on aggregate, as reported by the Evening Times.
Former Sunderland man Neil has failed to settle early at Ibrox, and the fierce reaction from the stands on Thursday night was the latest reminder of the challenge that he has to meet.
Why Dan Neil is refusing to panic
The numbers are not kind.
Derek McInnes has not won any of his first four competitive matches in charge, and the back line has been picked apart repeatedly.
Neil’s argument, in essence, is that these are organisation problems rather than a team that cannot defend, and that a settled back four would go a long way towards solving the issue.
It is a view echoed by the club’s activity in the market, with Rangers still chasing another key figure in central defence.
The proof will have to come quickly.
Rangers host St Mirren at Ibrox in the Premier Sports Cup this weekend, with a Conference League play-off against Czech side Jablonec next Thursday.
The talking points from a wretched night in Govan will not go away until a clean sheet arrives.
