Conor Coady is now a free agent after the one-time England international negotiated a mutual termination with Wrexham.
Don’t even think about it, Rangers.
Yes, the squad could be doing with another central defender. Yes, the team could be doing with an experienced head.
However, that player should not be Conor Coady.
Conor Coady now a free agent after Wrexham resolution
In August last year, the Merseyside-born player swapped Leicester City for Wrexham in a deal worth around £2 million.
That came after he was tracked by Rangers all last summer, when he was considered a key target for then-Gers head coach Russell Martin.
That move did not materialise. Coady did not kick on at Wrexham and his departure from North Wales isn’t a surprise given that he played just six times for the Red Dragons.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at Charlton.
Coady doesn’t offer what Rangers need
There’s always the ‘what if’ when the conversation of a free agent comes around.
In modern football, there’s rarely such a thing with signing-on fees and increased wages for those players.
However, at 33, and with his standing on a downward trajectory, this wouldn’t be a wise approach for Rangers.
He doesn’t have recovery pace, he’s not known to be strong on the ball or adept at playing out from the back.
Conor Coady wouldn’t have a sell-on fee or a major upside to even justify a short-term deal.
There will be other suitable candidates available, if a fourth central defender is required.
As reported by BBC Sport, a Wrexham read: “All at Wrexham AFC would like to thank Conor for his efforts while with the club and wish him well for the future.”
Another former Rangers is said to be in the frame as Coady’s replacement in the form of Joe Worrall.
