Barry Ferguson will manage Rangers’ legends side this weekend. The Barry Ferguson Tennent’s Sixes appointment has not changed since Rangers confirmed it last month. As of this update, published on 2 October 2026, he is set to lead the team into the revived tournament at Braehead Arena on 3 and 4 October.
The format and rules are now public. Supporters have a clear picture of the weekend ahead, including where Rangers sit in the draw.
Former Ibrox captain taking charge of legends side
Ferguson needs no introduction at Ibrox. Across two spells as a player, he won five league titles, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups, a trophy haul that made him one of the club’s most decorated captains.
He also has recent managerial experience at the highest level. Ferguson returned as Rangers’ interim manager in February 2025 and led the club to a European quarter-final. That spell gives him a direct link to the dressing room he now leads at the Barry Ferguson Tennent’s Sixes. Our initial appointment report covered the news when it broke in September.
Tournament format and 2026 schedule explained
The Tennent’s Sixes format is a throwback for many supporters. The original tournament ran for nine years, from 1984 to 1993, before it was shelved. Its 2026 revival brings back all 12 William Hill Premiership clubs for an indoor six-a-side event.
Saturday’s group stage splits the 12 teams into three regionalised groups of four. The top two from each group advance to Sunday. They are joined by the two best third-placed sides, completing the knockout line-up.
Organisers have added two new rules this year: sin-bins, used for the first time, and bonus points for winning on penalties. Both keep the fast, short format competitive across two busy days at Braehead Arena.
How Barry Ferguson will manage the Rangers legends team
Barry Ferguson will take sole charge of the Rangers legends side for both days of the tournament. He picks the team from the former players taking part, with full responsibility for selection and tactics. Those turning out for Rangers will wear the club’s official 2026/27 season kit, giving a nostalgic line-up a thoroughly modern look.
Rangers have not released further detail on the matchday selection process beyond that. Ferguson does hold full managerial control across the group stage and any knockout games Rangers reach.
What happens next
Attention turns now to Braehead Arena. Rangers open their campaign there on Saturday 3 October. Ferguson’s tournament role sits apart from first-team business, which continues under Derek McInnes, whose early progress features in our piece on the first-team rebuild under Derek McInnes.
Ferguson has stayed visible around the club this season too, including his former skipper’s recent derby analysis on the gap to Celtic. Confirmation of results and Rangers’ progress through the group stage will follow once the tournament starts. Our original Ferguson announcement story carries the background to this weekend’s appointment.
