Former Rangers captain James Tavernier has officially signed a one-year contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv to reunite with head coach Kenny Miller.
The 34-year-old right-back departs Ibrox after 11 seasons, having scored 144 goals across 565 appearances. That prolific output established him as the highest-scoring defender in British football history.
Defensive Transition Under McInnes
His departure forces a definitive tactical shift within manager Derek McInnes’ current defensive framework. James Penrice will assume elevated responsibilities as Rangers solidify their backline for the Scottish Premiership campaign. This reshaped unit recently executed an intense aggressive press during a 3-0 Premier Sports Cup victory, which ultimately triggered a fierce fan backlash across Glasgow.
New Challenge In Israel
The Israeli Premier League side holds an option to extend the deal by a further year. Speaking to STV News, the outgoing defender detailed his motivation for the overseas switch.
“It’s a real honour to join a club with such a rich history as Maccabi Tel Aviv,” he said.
He added: “Having played for a big club for so many years, I know how important the fans are and how much they can drive a team on.”
Rangers travel to face Celtic in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.
