Rangers and John Souttar have reached a financial compromise to void his contract ahead of a deadline-day switch to Greek top-flight side Aris Thessaloniki.
The 29-year-old has not played a single minute under Derek McInnes this season, finding himself entirely outside the manager’s plans. Ben Godfrey and Emmanuel Fernandez currently sit ahead of him in the central defensive pecking order. A scheduled medical was initially delayed after the proposed move stalled over financial compensation.
Financial Logic Behind Ibrox Departure
With the Greek transfer window closing just before midnight on 15 September, both parties have negotiated a severance package to ensure the deadline-day departure to Greece is completed.
Rather than protecting the exact value of the remaining contract, subsidising the financial gap today removes an unutilised senior international from the club’s wage bill. Carrying that sporting and financial cost into January risked creating an unnecessary burden.
Souttar logged 2,014 minutes across 24 Scottish Premiership appearances last term, alongside five Europa League outings. Despite his top-flight experience, keeping a senior player who offers zero match minutes provides a poor return on salary. Severing ties immediately provides a cleaner squad dynamic and preserves room for future recruitment.
The right-footed defender will now undergo a medical examination to finalise a three-year contract before the Greek market shuts.
