James Penrice warns Celtic ahead of Scottish Premiership return

April 9, 2026, Madrid, Madrid, Spain: James Penrice of AEK Athens FC warms up during the UEFA Conference League 2025/26 Quarter-finals First Leg match between Rayo Vallecano and AEK Athens FC at Estadio de Vallecas on April 09, 2026, in Madrid, Spain

Rangers left-back James Penrice insists his side possess further levels following their commanding 3-0 Premier Sports Cup victory over Celtic at Ibrox Stadium.

The 27-year-old was surprisingly deployed in central areas during the win, providing manager Derek McInnes with fresh tactical options ahead of Sunday’s meeting between the sides.

McInnes Unlocks Fresh Midfield Dynamic

Penrice originally arrived on a season-long loan from AEK Athens as defensive cover following a hamstring issue for Tuur Rommens. The National reported in August that the injury will keep the Belgian out for several weeks. However, the temporary arrival’s energy completely disrupted the visiting setup at Ibrox.

Speaking to Clyde 1, Penrice confirmed the move was planned: “The gaffer and I spoke at length about the decision to go inside and play a different role, and I think it worked.”

Premiership Return Fixture Approaches

With Rommens continuing his recovery, McInnes must decide whether to retain the makeshift setup this weekend. Penrice remains cautious despite securing a dominant Old Firm win.

“I definitely think we’ve got more gears to go, but at the same time I’m very wary that it’s one game at a time,” he told the Glasgow Times. “We think the game will be different. They’ll probably change stuff; we’ll probably change stuff.”

Rangers travel to face Celtic in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday 20 September.
