Steve Conroy issues red card verdict on Rangers defender James Penrice

Rangers left-back James Penrice avoided a red card during a commanding Premier Sports Cup victory over Celtic following a late clash with Haissem Hassan at Ibrox Stadium.

Referee Nick Walsh issued a yellow card after the defender kicked the ball into the Egypt international’s face. The altercation ignited following a penalty box tussle involving Dujon Sterling after 78 minutes, triggering a heated confrontation between both sets of players.

Sterling had initially battled for possession deep in defensive territory before Hassan slid in, prompting the controversial reaction from his defensive colleague. Hassan also received a booking to settle the dispute, while Sterling avoided disciplinary action despite his involvement in the initial challenge. The official otherwise enjoyed a relatively quiet afternoon despite overseeing two major VAR decisions during the tie. The ensuing melee demonstrated a collective willingness to protect teammates, a trait that had occasionally been absent during previous derby campaigns.

Former Scottish Football Association referee Steve Conroy argued that the AEK loanee was highly fortunate to remain on the pitch for the closing stages. Speaking on The Ref’s View podcast, he told the Daily Record that the decision should have resulted in a dismissal.

“He would have got the bullet, if I was doing it. He just blootered that ball straight into Hassan’s face. That is a straight red, off you go. There is no happy banter for that one for me,” Conroy said.

Restoring Physical Edge To The Derby

While officiating decisions generated immediate media scrutiny, the confrontation highlights a broader tactical shift in Govan. The readiness to engage physically and disrupt opponents signals a return of competitive grit to a fixture that had often lacked a confrontational edge in recent seasons.

Penrice delivered a combative performance to help neutralise the visiting wide threat as the hosts secured their triumph. The defender refused to back down when challenged, establishing early territorial dominance and embodying the abrasive approach Derek McInnes demands in high-stakes encounters.

Penrice consistently snapped into tackles and denied Celtic space to operate in advanced areas. His aggressive positioning allowed Rangers to sustain pressure and pin their rivals deep inside their own half.

This newfound resilience has reshaped the squad’s identity, especially after an agreed Maccabi Tel Aviv move for the former club captain. The departure of long-serving squad members left a void for aggressive leadership that senior personnel are clearly eager to fill.

Podcast host Scott McPike noted his appreciation for the spiky nature of the incident, despite conceding that the Rangers full-back was lucky to avoid an early dismissal. Conroy acknowledged this overarching shift in intensity, noting that the derby atmosphere had suffered previously before this recent injection of bite.

Transforming Ibrox Derby Dynamics This Season

“We have had totally insipid Rangers and Celtic games for years. So, I am saying he deserved the bullet for that – absolutely – but a few years ago, see if Scott Brown did it I would be saying exactly the same as you,” Conroy added.

The assertive victory has fundamentally altered the mood across Glasgow, compounding fierce fan backlash directed at Celtic executives following their comprehensive elimination. McInnes has rapidly forged a team willing to embrace the chaotic elements of the rivalry, shifting away from passive defensive structures to establish authority.

By aggressively contesting every loose ball and wide channel, the Ibrox side successfully rattled their city rivals. The willingness to mix it up in defensive transitions ensured the visiting attackers found no rhythm before the final whistle.

Rangers will face an immediate rematch when they travel to Parkhead for a Scottish Premiership fixture against Celtic on Sunday.
