South Korea’s new interim coach Robert Moreno has declared that his goal is to make the country’s football fans “happy” after a disastrous World Cup campaign and a string of damaging controversies.
As detailed by AFP, the former Spain coach, who earlier this year had to deny reports that he used ChatGPT to prepare for matches, will take charge of the national team for upcoming friendlies.
Rangers’ Minsu Kim has been called up by Moreno for the upcoming games against Ecuador, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Uzbekistan.
That decision could force Derek McInnes into an attacking rethink in the next few weeks.
The Korea Football Association said that Roberto Moreno could remain in the role through the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia in January/February, “subject to an evaluation.”
Moreno included captain Son Heung-min in his squad for four home friendlies and emphasised his desire to restore smiles to supporters’ faces.
Moreno prepares for South Korea challenge
“We’re going to try to do our work honestly and with the aim of making all Korean football fans happy,” said the 48-year-old.
“Good matches, and trying to help the players.”
South Korea has been without a permanent coach since Hong Myung-bo resigned after the team’s shock group-stage exit from the World Cup in June.
Hong’s departure did little to ease public anger over the disappointing tournament and only intensified existing questions about how he was appointed.
Police raided KFA headquarters last month as part of an investigation into Hong’s 2024 hiring.
The association has also apologised over allegations that it provided sexual entertainment for foreign referees.
Moreno’s first squad features striker Son (now with LAFC in MLS), Atlético Madrid’s Lee Kang-in, Bayern Munich’s Kim Min-jae, and Minsu Kim.
Many fans were furious when Hong left Son on the bench for the first half of the decisive World Cup match against South Africa.
“We’re all aware of Son’s versatility, said Moreno.
“For me he can play in three positions.”
Moreno AI storm
The new coach also addressed claims that he relied heavily on artificial intelligence while managing Russian club Sochi.
He left the side in September 2025 after a poor run of results, with reports suggesting he used ChatGPT extensively, including to help decide on potential new signings.
Moreno dismissed the story as “a piece of news that is completely false and went viral.”
“Obviously I use technology, he said.
“Anyone who spends 10 minutes looking into it can see that everything has been taken out of context and put together to cause harm.”
Moreno on Minsu
When asked about the inclusion of the man who now plies his trade at Ibrox, Moreno stated:
“I selected Minsu Kim based on his performances at his current club, Rangers.
“He is an excellent player capable of playing in several attacking roles.”
