Barry Ferguson identifies a £20m valuation as the primary Rangers obstacle
Barry Ferguson believes a £20m valuation from Bologna is the main obstacle blocking any Lewis Ferguson Rangers transfer. The former Ibrox captain points to the midfielder’s contract length as the reason for that price tag. Ferguson made the comments on Go Radio. He spoke just days after Lewis Ferguson confirmed that Rangers had shown interest in him over the summer. Those discussions never progressed.
Ferguson was blunt about where any deal would stand or fall. He said:
“That’s one of his ambitions; at some stage he will play for Rangers. Who knows when that will be? I would reckon Bologna will want a chunky transfer fee for him because I think he’s still got two years left on his contract. “Maybe one day, but I would love to see it myself. When that is, who knows? I would imagine what would have been the stumbling block would be the transfer fee, but as your contract runs down, you know what happens with transfer fees: they go lower. “You never know, at some stage it might be doable for Rangers if that transfer fee is a bit lower than what I think Bologna would want for him at this moment in time.
Asked directly whether Bologna would hold out for something in the region of £20m, Ferguson didn’t dismiss the figure. He said:
“Yeah, I would think they would be looking at that because of the length of his contract he’s got left. Never say never. Hopefully one day in the future we’ll see another Ferguson playing for Rangers.
That figure is Ferguson’s own estimate rather than one confirmed by Bologna. But it gives supporters a realistic sense of the size of the fee involved. Barry Ferguson’s latest assessment of the wider picture at Ibrox has more on where he thinks the club currently stands.
Barry Ferguson and Lewis Ferguson address the Ibrox transfer talk
The Daily Record interview carried Ferguson’s remarks. It followed comments Lewis Ferguson made earlier in the week, when he was asked if playing for Rangers is something he aspires to. His answer left little doubt about how he feels about the club.
“I think one day. It’s no secret I grew up a fan. That’s absolutely no secret. My family is involved in the club. It was an aspiration of mine, a dream of mine as a kid, and that’s not changed. But you know, I don’t want to speak about that while I’m still a player at Bologna, I’ve got too much respect for them. But yeah, in the future, you never know. It might happen, it might not. But it’s always been something at the back of my mind.
Those words came shortly after he confirmed the summer interest from Ibrox. Together, the two sets of comments point to mutual interest that has not yet turned into anything concrete. Nothing in either interview points to active negotiations. There is only a shared sense that a move could suit both sides somewhere down the line.
How Lewis Ferguson fits into Derek McInnes’s squad context
Rangers’ midfield has long valued competitive, ball-winning players. Lewis Ferguson’s box-to-box profile, with goals in him, would slot into that mould well. Derek McInnes’ name has been closely tied to Ibrox in this context. Ferguson has continued to develop in Serie A with Bologna, a clear step up from his time in Scottish football. Any move back would add a proven presence to the midfield options at Ibrox.
Our recent midfield partnership discussion looked at how Ferguson could line up alongside Billy Gilmour if a deal were ever done. The pairing remains an appealing prospect for supporters, even though it is not close to happening. For now, focus stays on the midfield options already at Ibrox Stadium.
Contract timeline and prospective transfer developments
Lewis Ferguson remains under contract with Bologna until 2028. That length of deal is precisely why Barry Ferguson sees the fee as such a barrier right now. As he explained, valuations tend to fall as a contract runs down. That means the £20m figure he has in mind is not necessarily fixed for the next two years.
There is no indication that a Lewis Ferguson Rangers transfer is being actively pursued at this stage. Both men were careful to frame it as a future possibility rather than anything in motion. Supporters will simply have to watch how the player’s situation at Bologna develops between now and 2028 and whether that valuation moves in Rangers’ favour.
