Rommens breakthrough keeps Rangers firmly in title hunt

Rangers moved within three points of Premiership league leaders Hearts with a scruffy 1-0 win over St Mirren in Paisley.

Following the Jambos defeat on Saturday to Kilmarnock, Danny Rohl and his side had the immediate chance to amend for a succession of recent draws.

They would grind out the victory at the SMISA Stadium thanks to a goal from January recruit Tuur Rommens in the first half.

Rommens finish at the far post from a Nicolas Raskin cross got him off the mark in Scotland and the Belgian said he was delighted with the outcome.

January signing delivers first goal in blue

Speaking to RangersTV on the match he said: “Perfect. It was just about winning today and we did the job.

“Away games in this competition are very tough. It’s very different from playing at home.

“I think every away game is a real battle. We just need to get the three points and we did this today.”

Rommens has been praised by the support and media alike since his arrival from Westerlo in January and was delighted to get off the mark in blue.

He said he was “very happy” to open his account and picked “a good moment to score.”

Rommens outlines Rangers run-in aim

Rangers now have the title back in their own hands, and eight wins from their final eight matches would see them crowned champions.

Rommens claimed that those wins, would be the teams aim.

“It’s very close up top. We just need to get eight wins and then we’ll see where we are.

“Everybody knew what the results were yesterday. You need to get the three points to get close and that’s what we did.”

Aberdeen up next

Many questions remain about the mentality of this Rangers side, particularly after recent back-to-back disappointing home results against Celtic.

But a clean sheet and a gritty away victory is exactly what champions do.

Will this match prove to be a decisive turning point come May?

The support will need to wait and see but the first of Rohl’s “nine cup finals” have ended in victory.

The end is now in sight – the next step and next test comes in the shape of Stephen Robinson’s Aberdeen at Ibrox next Saturday.
