- Mateusz Zukowski was once a ghost at Rangers
- The Polish star played second fiddle to James Tavernier
- He’s had a career transformation like very few in Germany
Successful position changes in professional football are a rarity, but the transformation of Mateusz Zukowski has been unworldly.
For a player who was essentially a ghost in Glasgow, his current form in Germany is staggering.
He joined Rangers from the club in 2022 and was billed to be the successor to Nathan Patterson at fullback.
Fast forward to 2026, and the Pole is indeed making headlines, but not for his defending.
In one of the most bizarre and brilliant career pivots in recent memory, the man who couldn’t buy a minute at Rangers has transformed into one of the most lethal strikers in the 2. Bundesliga.

Zukowski’s time at Rangers
Zukowski’s time in Glasgow was, to put it bluntly, forgettable.
He signed for £400,000 from Lechia Gdansk, making just one senior appearance, A Scottish Cup tie against Annan Athletic.
While Rangers fans watched James Tavernier continue his iron grip on the right-back slot, Zukowski languished in the B-team.
After six months and only one appearance, Zukowski moved back to Poland, joining Lech Poznan on loan for a year.
He then permanently left Rangers in the summer of 2023, joining Slask Wroclaw.
Many Rangers fans probably thought they’d never hear of his career again, but he’s made an incredible U-turn.
A change in fortune
As Real1_balogun mentions on X, after scoring three times in 66 games for Wroclaw, he made a switch that changed everything.
In September 2025, he signed for German side 1. FC Magdeburg.
He didn’t play in the first eight games of this season, and he was still recognised as a full back.
The Polish star was sidelined through injury, and when he returned, the club decided to give him a shot as a striker.
The results are incredible.
He currently boasts an incredible 17 goals in 19 games, a strike rate that has seen his market value quadruple in mere months.
Zukowski isn’t just poaching goals; he is dominating games.
The newborn striker netted a hat-trick against Greuther Furth in February and has braces against Schalke 04, Preußen Munster, and VfL Bochum.

To think that a goalscoring solution might have been sitting in the reserves, playing in the wrong position, is enough to make any fan’s head spin.
However, it’s not like it was only Rangers where the Polish star struggled; he failed to make an impact everywhere else.
His move to Germany was fortunate, and now Magdeburg has struck gold with his position change.
Hopefully, Zukowski continues his goalscoring form and can earn himself a big move to a major league in Europe.
