History on the line as Rangers battle Hearts in must-win Tynecastle title clash

  • Rangers must beat Hearts at Tynecastle to keep title hopes alive and stop a historic Old Firm record being matched.
  • Hearts unbeaten at home and chasing Alex Ferguson-era record against Rangers and Celtic.
  • Danny Rohl urges focus while Derek McInnes backs belief and hostile home advantage to maintain momentum.

Rangers are not just fighting to keep their title hopes alive tonight, they are also tasked with stopping Hearts from matching a record that has stood for nearly half a century.

The Edinburgh side, led by former Gers midfielder Derek McInnes, are chasing a landmark achievement: equalling Alex Ferguson’s long-standing record for the most single-season victories against the Old Firm.

It adds another layer of jeopardy to an already defining fixture at Tynecastle Park.

Hearts dominance meets Rangers urgency

Hearts’ Premiership credentials are undeniable at this late stage.

They have led the Premiership since matchday six and remain unbeaten at home, turning Tynecastle into one of the most difficult venues in the country.

For Rangers, the equation is simple.

Anything less than victory leaves their title ambitions dead in the water and hands further momentum to a side already threatening to make history.

Danny Rohl: “Final final” mentality

Rangers boss Danny Rohl acknowledged the scale of the occasion.

“It’s a big game ahead of us,” he said.

“We face the leader of the table and we want to take points.”

“We have four games to go it is a huge one, if we win, maybe it’s the final final?

“But after the final final comes the next final final.

“It makes no sense to value one game bigger than the other one.”

Derek McInnes: belief driving Hearts’ charge

On the other side, McInnes has built a side defined by resilience and belief, even when labelled underdogs.

“We go into these games normally as an underdog,” he admitted.

“But with real belief, genuine belief.”

That mentality has translated into results, particularly against the league’s traditional heavyweights.

“The games against Rangers and Celtic have been a good reference, we’ve always tried to go to the wire.”

Rangers face Tynecastle test

McInnes also highlighted the importance of home advantage, with Tynecastle playing a central role in Hearts’ success.

“We’ve used Tynecastle brilliantly this season,” he said.

“We want to make it as hostile and as loud as possible.”

With Rangers arriving under pressure, the environment is expected to be intense from the outset.

“The fans have got a part to play, to try to get every little advantage,” McInnes revealed.

David vs Goliath narrative

Despite their league position, Hearts continue to frame themselves as challengers rather than favourites.

“Rangers have got huge advantages over us,” McInnes admitted.

“For us to even be in the same conversation shows the effort from everybody.”

It is a narrative that has fuelled their consistency, and one that Rangers must disrupt if they are to reassert control in the title race.

This is about more than three points.

Rangers are walking into a ground where no team has won in the league this season, facing a side chasing history and playing with clarity, structure, and belief.

Allow Hearts to dictate the terms, and the consequences are twofold: the title race becomes a two-horse race between the Jambos and Celtic, and a historic record is matched at Rangers’ expense.

Rohl is right to emphasise consistency of approach.

But the reality is sharper than that.

This is the game that defines whether Rangers are still contenders, or if they fall short once again.
