- Ross McCausland set to leave Aris Limassol when loan spell ends this summer.
- Rangers plan no first-team return under Danny Rohl and will seek permanent transfer away from Ibrox.
- Winger made 25 appearances, scoring four goals and three assists in Cyprus.
Ross McCausland’s loan spell at Aris Limassol is set to come to an end this summer, with the winger expected to leave the Cypriot side once the season concludes.
According to Protathlima.com, the 22-year-old’s temporary move from Rangers is effectively viewed as over.
There is no indication that it will be extended into another campaign or that any purchase option will be taken up.
McCausland arrived in Cyprus seeking regular first-team football and development away from Ibrox.
While he has remained a consistent feature in the side, the spell has not evolved into a standout breakthrough season.
Across the campaign, he has made 25 appearances, scored four goals and registering three assists.
The Northern Irish international joined up with ex-Ibrox trio Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun and Wes Foderingham at Aris but he will not remain with his former teammates.
No pathway back into Danny Rohl’s plans
Despite still being under contract at Rangers, McCausland does not currently appear to have a route back into the first-team picture under Danny Rohl.
Sources indicate Rohl has no plans to reintegrate the winger into his squad for next season.
With the club set to try and seal a permanent exit for the player this summer.
That stance effectively closes the door on a full time return, regardless of McCausland’s intention to use pre-season to assess his situation.
Ross McCausland set for summer exit
McCausland is understood to have already communicated his desire to return to Rangers during the summer in order to take part in pre-season preparations.
However, the club’s position suggests a different outcome will be pursued.
There is no place currently earmarked for him in the squad.
Now both Rangers and the player are expected to work together this summer to secure a permanent move away from Ibrox.
A loan exit now appears unlikely, with a full transfer seen as the most realistic resolution for all parties.
An “underwhelming” loan
McCausland’s time at Aris Limassol can be summarised as functional for his development rather than a resurgence.
He gained valuable minutes in a senior environment, maintained consistent involvement, and contributed modestly in the final third.
But the step-change often required to force a return into Rangers’ plans did not fully materialise.
Added to this he did not make a consistent enough impact to be viewed as a permanent option for Aris.
The winger has “only completed 90 minutes five times, hasn’t scored many and hasn’t assisted many either,” according to Cypriot football podcaster Stel Stylianou.
“To say he has been underwhelming would be fair, although Aris haven’t had many standout players this season.

As things stand, McCausland enters the summer at a career crossroads.
Still only 22, he retains time to develop and establish himself elsewhere.
But not within the current Rangers structure.
For Rangers, it is another example of a loan spell that has provided experience without altering long-term squad planning.
A short-term solution.
For McCausland, it is now about converting that experience into a stable next move that offers regular football.
His future will be away from Ibrox, even if his contract still ties him to the club for now.
Rangers also face similar situations with other returning exiles.
Jose Cifuentes, Clinton Nsiala, Danilo and Oscar Cortes will all return to Govan this summer with no futures at the club.
