Rangers left-back Tuur Rommens has denied that the current Ibrox squad have any issues with mentality after throwing away the Premiership title.

The Gers lost back-to-back clashes with Motherwell and Hearts to leave them nine points behind the Jambos with three games remaining.

The 23-year-old however feels the issue has been with focus within games rather than down to the mental strength of the group.

“I think the mentality in this group is great. We have no issues with that,” Rommens stated.

“I don’t think it’s about mentality.

“It’s just also adjustments in the game.

“Obviously, it’s a hard place to go [Tynecastle]. On Monday it was a hard place.

“I don’t think it’s mentality. Maybe a little bit of focus.”

Rangers and Danny Rohl now turn their attention to Celtic Park, with Sunday’s Old Firm offering a chance to also drag Celtic out of the title race, should Hearts defeat Motherwell on Saturday.

Rommens spoke about what he and his teammates expect heading into the game.

“We go in full force, we think that we can take something there,” he revealed.

“I think we have a great group, great players. I’m looking forward to it.”

Belgian backs his boss

He also offered backing to Rohl, who has come under fire following Rangers past two fixtures.

The German boss has also been linked with a move to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

But Rommens insists belief remains from the squad to the boss.

“I spoke with him before I came here and I was totally convinced of the style of playing, of his thoughts and ideas, what he has brought into this group,” he explained.

“I think he has done a great job.”

Looking ahead to the Old Firm match Rommens revealed that the opportunity to play in such a high-profile fixture was a key reason for his January move from Westerlo.

I think these are the biggest games in the season,” he said.

“I think a lot of viewers, a lot of atmosphere, everything around it is so big.

“When I came here, I really looked forward to these games.”

Danny Rohl on mentality at Ibrox

Rohl also addressed growing questions surrounding the mentality of his squad following the defeat to Hearts.

The Rangers boss warned that success at Ibrox can only come through collective responsibility rather than individual thinking, insisting the team must avoid slipping back into “old habits” during difficult moments in matches.

Rohl pointed towards poor decision-making, lack of recovery runs and lapses in concentration during the second half at Tynecastle as examples of where standards had dropped, while reiterating that Rangers must become more consistent across the full ninety minutes if they are to challenge properly next season.

Sunday’s clash at Celtic Park now represents the perfect opportunity for Rangers to prove their recent collapse was not caused by a weak mentality.

With criticism intensifying around both the squad and Rohl, the Belgian insists belief inside the dressing room remains strong despite consecutive defeats.

The Old Firm derby also offers Rommens the type of occasion he envisioned when moving to Ibrox.

A high-pressure, high-profile fixture where Rangers have the chance to restore pride, strengthen their push for second place and potentially derail Celtic in the title race.
