- Rangers and Celtic are locked in a dispute over the cost of damages following on from the infamous Scottish Cup quarter-final in March
- Ibrox chiefs have asked for a seven-figure sum but this hasn’t been received well at Parkhead
- The stalemate is now being dealt with by the Scottish FA, but what will the outcome be?
Rangers and Celtic are locked in a fresh dispute over damage caused by away fans during and after the Scottish Cup quarter-final back in March.
Clashes on the pitch between rival fans was the result of the pitch invasion from the Broomloan Road stand, occupied by Celtic fans.
As detailed by the Rangers Review, the word from Ibrox is that significant damage was caused to the LED advertising boards around the perimeter of the pitch.
This has been a major contributor to a repair bill around the ballpark of £1 million.
Celtic has offered to pay £50,000.
Rangers and Celtic in fresh dispute
The report from Chris Jack details the extent of yet another fallout, but there were always going to be consequences after what happened on March 8.
“Celtic have told their Old Firm rivals that they will not foot the bill and have put forward a Scottish FA regulation that caps payments in such scenarios to just £50,000.
“Rangers believe they should not be left to pay the costs for the damage done by the away support and the matter is already under discussion at Hampden.
“Celtic had an allocation of 7,500 for the Broomloan Stand. Celtic collected the ticket money for the briefs sold to their fans and the pot is then halved under Scottish Cup rules.
“Rangers have so far withheld a six-figure sum that is due to Celtic while discussions are ongoing, while Rangers believe there is scope within the rulebook for them to be recompensed above the £50,000 limit.”
If Rangers and Celtic cannot achieve progress on the impasse, the Scottish FA will be forced to adjudicate.
Further arrests and ongoing probe
Today, May 15, it was confirmed that five more arrests have been made following the disorder.
Sports event consultant Mark Blackbourne is leading the Scottish FA’s investigation into the events of the day, before and after the cup clash that Celtic won on penalties.
Blackbourne has commenced the probe following a meeting that he attended with representatives from the SFA, Police Scotland, and both clubs.
