- Rangers are in contract talks with Liam Kelly, with no agreement reached so far
- Jack Butland’s situation is also under scrutiny, with a departure on the cards
- That would mean two out and two in, with the goalkeeper situation to be monitored
Rangers are confirmed to be in contract talks with Liam Kelly, with the potential of the two first-team goalkeepers leaving the club this summer.
The situation around the Scotland World Cup squad member is an interesting one, given his age and profile.
The club and the fans will be in no hurry to see Kelly leave, but will he want more game time, especially with the uncertainty around Jack Butland?
Liam Kelly locked in Rangers contract talks
Liam Kelly is a solid squad member for different reasons.
He is a very capable keeper, he is club-trained and homegrown. He is also a consummate professional who knows all about the standards required at Ibrox and the demands that come with it.
The season just past was a frustrating, uneventful one for the former Motherwell stopper.
Liam Kelly made just three first-team appearances in the 2025/26 campaign.
Two Scottish Cup outings and one League Cup game, with two clean sheets out of three.
Latest on Liam Kelly situation
Kelly is out of contract in the coming weeks, with live negotiations taking place with the club.
Chris Jack reported for the Rangers Review:
“No agreement has yet been reached for Kelly to commit his future to Rangers.
“It is expected that talks will continue as the 30-year-old prepares to join up with the national squad ahead of the friendly fixtures with Curaçao and Bolivia this month.”
Wages won’t be an issue.
It will likely come down to playing time and the role envisaged for Kelly going forward, especially when he has his Scotland place to consider.

Rangers need a new first-choice goalkeeper this summer.
To play from the back, to distribute the ball and to be a more fluid team, Rangers will need a better option between the posts.
Jack Butland is not that man.
The former England international, signed by Michael Beale, is entering the last year of his contract and now would be the right time to shake hands and move on.
He won’t be short of offers from England or abroad, and a nominal transfer fee would not be a deterrent for interested suitors.
Two out, two in could be the case for this key position as Danny Rohl prepares for widespread changes, but hopefully Liam Kelly can be retained for all that he brings to the squad.
