The SFA has published its independent review into the events of March 8 when Old Firm disorder erupted after the Scottish Cup semi-final between Rangers and Celtic.
The game ended scoreless with Celtic prevailing on penalties, then a pitch invasion by Celtic supporters triggered a reaction from Rangers fans.
There were many actions and incidents on the day from home and away fans that were unacceptable and those individuals will suffer consequences.
Rangers and Celtic are now facing disciplinary charges, wth identical notices of complaint issued to Ibrox and Parkhead, respectively, following the review.
However, this Independent Review is noticeable for how it doesn’t scrutinise the SFA’s insistence that the full Broomloan allocation be afforded to Celtic fans or the clear operational failings on the day.
James Tavernier reports racial abuse from away fans
Another amazing revelation that hasn’t come to light until the publication of the report is that James Tavernier reported that he was racially abused by an away fan during the game and the Independent Review detailed that two children in the home end were struck by coins thrown from the away stand, including one wheelchair-bound supporter.
The report is 37 pages long.
It cites a whole catalogue of incidents before, during and after the game, as well as numerous findings and recommendations.
There are important safety considerations made, with concern about where plans fell short. Safety is paramount and most people would recognise this, but worryingly, the report goes on to take an authoritarian approach against supporter expression and also makes the case for further digitalisation and ID checks with entry to games.
Also, there is an incredible suggestion that “host clubs must provide a genuinely welcoming away environment” and “club mascots must not antagonise the away support”.
Dearie me.
There will be a lot more to come from this. Rangers have already issued their own official response, which is a strongly worded representation of the club’s position.
One thing for sure is that the full away allocations at Old Firm games are not coming back anytime soon.
