Rangers are yet to follow up on the initial contact made with Lecce over Corrie Ndaba.
The Republic of Ireland international made just six starts for the Apulia-based club last season, with a further eight appearances from the bench as Lecce narrowly avoided relegation.
According to Calcio Lecce, “Rangers asked for information, and the player likes the idea (of a potential move) because he was usually on the bench in his first season here. There has been no further movement or discussions for now.”
The springboard for Ndaba’s move to Serie A last summer was the spell he enjoyed at Kilmarnock, where he played under Derek McInnes.
That explains the enquiry, especially as Rangers still need cover in central defence and at left back.
The 26-year-old Dubliner made his full debut for the Republic of Ireland earlier this year in May.
Priority transfer activity for Rangers
Tuur Rommens will be Rangers’ first-choice left-back this season.
The club wants a development pathway open for Ashton Scally, who despite being just 16, is thought to be ready to contribute and play a part in and around the first-team squad.
He has had to contend with an injury, limiting his pre-season activity, but the wider defensive picture brings a player like Corrie Ndaba into contention.
With Manny Fernandez in place, Ben Godfrey appears to have the other centre-back place, but further competition is required.
Rangers will need to sign two central defenders (especially as John Souttar is on his way out), with one of them able to operate at left-back.
Vanja Dragojevic is on the brink of securing his move to Ibrox and a right wing option is sorely required.
Further cover and squad options, like Ndaba, are required, but there appear to be greater priorities just now, including necessary movement on player sales and departures at Ibrox.
