– Former Hearts striker Ryan Stevenson has stressed how difficult it will be for Hearts to replace Lawrence Shankland
– Stevenson also made a claim on the Scotland striker’s credentials to assume the Rangers captaincy
– The high-profile transfer is expected to be completed in the next couple of days

Former Hearts striker Ryan Stevenson believes Lawrence Shankland is in a strong position to be Rangers captain next season.

Stevenson lamented the Jambos’ impending loss, stressing how difficult it will be to replace their skipper and talisman, particularly his goals.

The Ayrshire-native said it could take two new signings to make up for what Hearts are about to lose.

Lawrence Shankland tipped to assume leadership position at Ibrox

In conversation with BBC Radio Scotland, Ryan Stevenson said:

“Straight away, you’re losing 20 to 30 goals a season if Shankland leaves.

“You’re losing your captain, who is pivotal on and off the park.

He continued, “One of Hearts’ title rivals is potentially taking their best player. It’s a bitter blow.

They’re going to somehow have to try to replace him and I just don’t see how Hearts do that.

“They need to find solutions, maybe that’s signing two players. They are going to have to put their money where their mouth is.”

Shankland to replace Tavernier as Rangers captain?

The 41-year-old has also made the case that Shankland’s experience, ability and leadership qualities make him a great candidate to take over the captain’s armband from the now-departed James Tavernier.

He is certainly a leader – with Danny Rohl wanting more of those in his dressing room.

“From Rangers’ point of view, what a signing, said Stevenson.

“I would be very surprised if he wasn’t in with a shout of being Rangers captain too, with Tavernier leaving.

“I think he would score more goals for Rangers than he does for Hearts. If it goes through, it’s a tremendous signing for Rangers.”
