“Just over £3 million, we expect him to sign” – Rangers transfer news latest

Rangers transfer news latest has signalled the incoming arrival of the eighth summer signing at the club – Olwethu Makhanya.

The South African World Cup squad member is on the brink of clinching a transfer from Philadelphia Union in MLS to become Derek McInnes’ latest recruit.

On the Rangers Review Morning Briefing, Chris Jack was in discussion with Stevie Clifford on the latest developments, including transfers and the open training day that was hosted at Ibrox on Monday.

Jack revealed further information on the Makhanya transfer, which is believed to be close to completion.

“Olwethu Makhanya will become the latest signing for Rangers.

“A deal has been agreed for $4.5 million, just over £3 million, we expect him to sign a four-year contract and he will become the next man in the door, all going well.”

What do we know about Olwethu Makahnya?

Not a lot is the short answer.

Apart from MLS enthusiasts out there, it not a league at the forefront of most fans’ radars, and this firmly appears to be a scouting/data led signing.

From the obligatory YouTube footage, he looks a player who is very comfortable in possession, with flexibility to play across the back line.

Read Rangers has spoken to people at Stellenbosch FC in South Africa, Makhanya’s former club before Union, and we will be bringing that information to you as soon as possible.

Given the situation in central defence, the player is likely to be involved as soon as possible.

It is expected that another defender will be recruited in this transfer window, with John Souttar heading out and Clinton Nsiala also not in the first team picture.

More to follow on Olwethu Makhanya.
