PSV Eindhoven director of football Earnest Stewart has spoken out on why Couhaib Driouech’s transfer to Rangers broke down.
Earlier today, Read Rangers detailed how the truth emerged on the failed transfer.
The situation can now be summarised as a dispute over the extent of Driouech’s minor injury.
PSV believed it would clear in little more than a week, with Rangers insisting it could be up to six weeks, and on that basis, they wanted to renegotiate the deal.
The Eindhoven club would not entertain that proposal.
PSV respond on Couhaib Driouech transfer collapse
As reported by Rangers Review on Friday afternoon, Stewart set out the Dutch club’s perspective:
“In short, we believed that Couhaib would be fit again very soon. He had suffered a minor injury and, in our opinion, would be able to play matches again within a week, or at least very soon.
“They estimate the period he will be unable to play to be much longer than we do. From what I understood, six weeks. So we think it is considerably shorter.”
Rangers went back to PSV to explore if a loan-to-buy deal could be agreed, but the response was sharp.
Stewart responded, “This was going to be a permanent transfer, and that was not on the table.”
The outcome was that Rangers backed out of the deal and everything was off.
Rangers must secure quality Driouech alternative
Rightly or wrongly, this is viewed as a botched transfer for Rangers.
A player of quality was identified, but not signed in time (particularly for the Jagiellonia exit), and now the need is greater.
Criticism and pressure are building on Derek McInnes and Rangers, and that requires ‘replacing’ Driouech with a player of quality, ready to hit the ground running.
