Ex-Rangers player linked with St Mirren job ahead of Paisley clash

Rangers could be set to face a familiar face this Sunday if the Premiership’s managerial dominoes fall a certain way.

Danny Rohl and his side will make the short journey to Paisley to face St Mirren as they look to bounce back from back-to-back Old Firm disappointments and keep themselves in the league title fight.

However, as reported yesterday, Stephen Robinson has now managed his final match for the Buddies after being confirmed as the new Aberdeen manager.

Both clubs had earlier confirmed that Robinson had entered talks with the Dons, and the move has now been finalised.

St Mirren said in a statement: “While we are sad to see Stephen leave the club, he departs with the best wishes of everyone at St Mirren after four years of outstanding service.

“Thank you for your contributions, Stephen.”

Aberdeen will be hoping to repeat the success of Sir Alex Ferguson, another former Saints manager who went on to great success in the Granite City.

Replacement race begins

However, Robinson’s replacement in Paisley has yet to be confirmed, with former Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam linked with the role.

Adam spent five years at Rangers during his playing career, making his debut in April 2004 before departing permanently in the summer of 2009 to join Blackpool. He would then go on to enjoy a successful career in the English Premier League.

Charlie Adam at St Mirren

Charlie Adam first came to prominence during his season-long loan spell at Love Street in 2005/06.

Then just 19, he needed regular first-team football and found it with then second-tier St Mirren.

He played a key role in the club’s double-winning season, helping them secure the Scottish Challenge Cup and the Championship title. Adam scored nine goals in 37 appearances during the campaign.

Reflecting on his time in Paisley, Adam has spoken fondly of the experience but always made it clear he viewed the spell as a stepping stone back to Ibrox.

“I was playing in a solid team that secured promotion and won the Challenge Cup, so it was a wonderful experience,” he told FourFourTwo.

“Out on loan, I had it in my mind that I was a Rangers player and I had to show that.

“I always believed I was good enough to play for Rangers.”

Adam later had spells with Liverpool, Stoke City and Reading before finishing his playing career at boyhood club Dundee, where he retired in 2022.

Coaching chops

Since then, his only spell in management came with Fleetwood Town, who were relegated from England’s League One during his tenure.

However, he has built a solid reputation as a coach. Adam worked under David Moyes at Everton from January to June last year as a set-piece coach.

Adam’s former Rangers teammate Steven Naismith has also been linked with the vacancy, alongside the likes of Robbie Neilson and John Hughes.

St Mirren’s reserve coaching duo Craig McLeish and Jamie Langfield oversaw training on Wednesday and are likely to take charge of Sunday’s match against Rangers unless a new appointment is made before then.

Robinson leaves Paisley after four years in charge, having guided St Mirren to major silverware earlier this season when they defeated Celtic in the League Cup final at Hampden.
