Rangers target Mikey Moore extension as title charge shapes summer transfer plans

  • Mikey Moore was again key to Rangers victory over Aberdeen on Saturday, scoring the second goal.
  • The winger has publicly said he would like to remain at Ibrox beyond his loan expiry this summer.
  • With Danny Rohl also confirming his desire to keep the teenager, we look at how realistic that could be.

Rangers manager Danny Rohl spent the January transfer window looking to adjust the disarrayed squad built by Russell Martin in the summer.

Pre-season recruits such as Joe Rothwell and Lyall Cameron have moved out the door just months after their arrivals under the former Scotland defender.

Others such as Derek Cornelius and Max Aarons are completely out of the first team picture.

One summer recruit, however, has proven to be a remarkable addition, despite early grumblings.

That player is Mikey Moore.

Moore is a rising star

The 18-year-old on loan from Tottenham has been a revelation since Rohl’s arrival.

Blessed with pace and trickery, the Englishman gets supporters out their seats and netted an excellent goal in the win over Aberdeen.

The fans voiced their pleasure in the winger, loudly singing his name throughout the 90-minutes.

Moore voiced how greatly this is appreciated and that their adoration is reciprocated.

“For a loan player they’ve been unbelievable,” he said, praising the crowd.

“They back me and sing my name, I feel the love from the fans, it is something special.”

Mentality monsters

Moore, along with Rangers as a team, suffered criticism in the early stages of the campaign.

Many questioned the squad’s mentality and ability as well as Moore’s own quality but since the managerial change, both keep going from strength to strength.

He said: “People have written us off many times, it was written off two weeks ago.

“There’s always a chance to get back in it.”

Extending his stay

While six goals and three assists doesn’t seem like a huge impact – Moore passes every eye test and is a key cog in the Rangers machine at present, with many fans desperate for him to extend his stay in Scotland beyond the summer.

Moore was coy when quizzed on the discussions over his future but made sure to note he would love to stay.

“I’m just going to enjoy the next seven games,” he said.

“I don’t know if there’s been much club-to-club contact yet, but conversations are happening.

“If it’s right for me next year, then I’d love to stay here.”

Rohl also keen to retain

Rohl was also very clear on his desire to keep hold of Moore.

“There’s no question mark,” he said about wanting to keep the player.

“We know he’s still not our player, but conversations are always there.

“We are very clear what we want.”

Rangers fans have been burned by successful loan players in recent years, Abdallah Sima, Vaclav Cerny and Malik Tillman have all shone at Ibrox but departed after their year-long stints in Scotland.

Ryan Kent was the last loanee to make a permanent move after shining – but is a full-time deal on the cards for Moore?

Valued at around £20m it seems unlikely Rangers could meet that figure.

Given his nationality, age and the expectations for his future at Spurs, a sale is implausible.

But another loan? That could depend on how the season finishes.

If Rangers can convert this late-season momentum into a league title and secure UEFA Champions League football, the argument to extend his stay becomes significantly stronger.

From Spurs perspective, placing a young, high-upside attacker in an environment offering elite European exposure, high-pressure fixtures, and guaranteed minutes could represent an ideal development pathway.

This rings particularly true in a season where they themselves are set to miss out on continental competition.

However, that calculation shifts dramatically if Spurs’ domestic struggles culminate in relegation to the Championship.

In that scenario, Moore would likely transition from promising loanee to central figure at his parent club.

Rangers fans will now be backing not only their own team to win from now until May, but also Spurs, in the hopes it will keep their talisman around just that short while longer.
