  • Fernandez and Gassama earn international debuts as Rangers monitor growing transfer interest.
  • Over 32,000 fans renew season tickets despite price rise, showing strong backing
  • Academy criticism, Souness reflection and Ferguson praise highlight club-wide talking points

Rangers duo Emmanuel Fernandez and Djeidi Gassama made their international debuts last night.

Defender Fernandez made his Nigeria bow in their 2-1 win over Iran.

The Super Eagles played the war-torn nation at the Mardan Stadyumu in Turkey.

They were victorious thanks to goals from Moses Simon and Akor Adams.

The Rangers stopper came on at half-time to replace Hull City’s Semi Ajayi but could not prevent Mehdi Taremi pulling a goal back.

He said his Nigeria call up was something he had “always wanted to happen” in a Rangers TV interview.

The defender has been touted for moves to Germany and England but Rangers are keen to retain the former Peterborough player.

Winger Gassama also featured for Mauritania in their 2-1 defeat to Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

He started the match and played 63 minutes before being substituted.

He came close to a debut goal with an effort that went just wide of Emiliano Martinez’s far post.

Rangers thank fans for brilliant renewal numbers

Rangers have praised and thanked supporters for their continued backing after over 32,000 signed up to renew their season tickets within the first two days of sales.

Despite a 6.5% increase announced by chairman Andrew Cavenagh, faithful followers of the Ibrox team have agreed to continue their weekly support in large numbers.

Ex-academy kid blasts ‘toxic’ system

Former Rangers youth player Leyton Grant has blasted the “toxic” Rangers academy system after his 2024 summer release from Ibrox.

The 19-year-old told the Rangers Review that after the B-team’s resignation from the Lowland League the atmosphere “became quite toxic” with two or three months between fixtures for the young players.

He claims that he was cast aside by the academy and that “if they didn’t see you as a first-team player then you were basically done.”

Grant has rebuilt his career with League 1 title chasers Stenhousemuir this campaign.

Souness praises Ibrox job as “best I ever had”

Rangers legend and former manager Greame Souness has called himself “brave and mad” for taking the player-manager role in 1986.

He revolutionised the club and set the groundwork for nine-in-a-row with several huge signings and the restoration of Gers standards.

He says he has no regrets despite admitting mistakes and would do it all over again, claiming it to be the best job he ever had.

Souness won three Premiership titles and four league cups during his time in the Ibrox dugout.

Ferguson praises Cavenagh’s “statement of intent”

Barry Ferguson believes chairman Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises have shown they are all in at Rangers after their most recent investment.

The former Rangers captain wrote in his Daily Record column about his high hopes for the future of the regime.

He said: “You can tell how much it has affected him since he took over the club in May.

“That came through loud and clear the other night when he signalled his intentions for the summer.

“By investing another £16m in the club, the owner is showing real, long-term commitment.

“Most of it will go into buying players and that tells me Andrew and the board want to stay on the front foot and continue to push forward.”
