  • Rangers target Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles as keeper contracts near end.
  • Teen talents Ashton Scally, Alexander Smith, Aiden McCallion, and Rydnn McGuire progress through Rangers youth, with latter trio earning Scotland U19 recognition.
  • Rangers striker Yousef Chermiti shines domestically; Portugal U21s defeat Scotland 3-0 in EURO 2027 qualifier.

Sheffield Wednesday star Pierce Charles is reportedly being targeted by his former manager Danny Rohl for a summer move to Rangers.

According to the Yorkshire Post, Rohl is keen to bring the 20-year-old goalkeeper to Scotland.

With the Owls already relegated to League One and facing financial difficulties, Rangers are keen to swoop up the Northern Irish stopper.

He has been praised by his manager Henrik Pederson, despite his sides dreadful campaign.

“In a very, very difficult environment, we have still made a very, very good development. Pierce, he could be a top, top goalkeeper,” he explained.

Jack Butland is number one at Ibrox.

However, the German boss would prefer a goalkeeper more comfortable with the ball at his feet.

A quality the Wednesday keeper possesses.

Backup keepers Liam Kelly and Kieran Wright are both out of contract in the summer, with only Kelly set to be offered an extension.

Teen starlet set to sign pro deal

Rangers have reportedly secured the signing of teenage star Ashton Scally amid interest from English Premier League sides according to the Daily Record.

The 15-year-old is highly rated by Rohl, and the left-back has been linked to teams such as Manchester City and Chelsea.

The German coach wanted to hand Scally his debut alongside Kyle Glasgow against Annan in the Scottish Cup.

They were denied due to red tape regarding under 16’s in the competition.

“It was a shame it was not allowed to take Kyle and Ashton as well,” Rohl explained after handing a debut to 17-year-old Zebedee Lawson.

“They could use this opportunity to play, but there are some rules.”

“These are high-potential players. We like them, we want to keep them and hopefully if they have the right age, they can help us as well.”

Rangers youth trio make Scotland mark

Rangers youth trio Alexander Smith, Aiden McCallion and Rydnn McGuire all featured for Scotland U19’s as they defeated Poland 3-0 in Airdrie.

The outfield duo of Smith and McCallion both netted to give Neil MacFarlane’s side the victory.

All three have featured on the bench for Rangers in the Europa League over the past year and have trained with Rohl’s first team.

Goalkeeper McGuire recently praised the influence of first-choice stopper Jack Butland on his game.

“He gave me a tip in training once when we were doing a finishing drill, and I felt so different after,” he explained.

“I took it into youth games and felt so much better. I was making saves that I wouldn’t ordinarily make.”

McCallion spoke about his experiences with the top squad, including an appearance on the bench against Bilboa last season.

He said: “I was on the bench in big games last season and the two Europa League games against Bilbao.”

“That was a great experience. The atmosphere you hear when sitting on the bench was unbelievable.

“Travelling with the squad to Spain was incredible and I learned so much from that experience. I really felt part of it all.

“The next step for me is to make my competitive debut for Rangers and that would mean the world to me.”

Smith has been an inspired signing on loan for League Two side Dumbarton.

He has contributed three assists during their recent seven match unbeaten run.

Sons gaffer Frank McKeown praised the 17-year-olds ability.

“Alexander gives us a new dimension in attack,” he said.

“He’s someone with a very strong pedigree and is the sort of player who is always looking to create chances.”

Chermiti conquers Scotland

Rangers striker Yousef Chermiti got the better of Gers transfer target Luke Graham as Portugal U21’s defeated Scotland 3-0 in a EURO 2027 qualifier in Estoril.

Luís Freire’s side ran out comfortable winners against Scot Gemmil’s side to keep their unbeaten record intact.

They have also gone eight qualifying matches without conceding a goal.

Chermiti scored in their previous win over Azerbaijan but failed to net against Scotland.

He has nine goals for Rangers, with eight coming against both Hearts and Celtic.
