- Lewis Ferguson has long-standing personal ambition to play for Rangers, confirmed by his agent.
- Agent reveals Rangers never seriously moved for him, and early academy exit still “stung.”
- High transfer valuations and elite European interest make an Ibrox return unlikely for now.
The agent of Lewis Ferguson, Bill McMurdo made comments earlier this week regarding the midfielder’s long-term ambitions in European football.
Now further remarks have helped clarify both the player’s long-standing affinity for Rangers, and why a return to Scotland remains firmly off the table for now.
McMurdo previously outlined Ferguson’s desire to compete at the highest level in Italy and England.
However, a separate set of comments to the Daily Record have added important context to the player’s career path and early relationship with Rangers.
The man who once represented Mo Johnston during his earth-shattering move to Ibrox was clear.
There was no point during Ferguson’s development, that there was there a serious pathway back to Ibrox when the midfielder was coming through in Scotland.
Rangers history with Lewis Ferguson
“No never, not in my opinion,” McMurdo said when asked if Rangers had been close to signing him in the past.
This was despite a deep rooted connection to the Ibrox club, where his father Derek and uncle Barry both starred.
He also reflected on the club’s earlier assessment of Ferguson as a youth player.
“First of all, I couldn’t understand why they got rid of him,” McMurdo said.
“They said he was too heavy and he would never make the grade.
“That stung, as you can imagine.”
The player’s Ibrox desire
Despite that, McMurdo insists Ferguson’s personal ambition to one day represent Rangers has never disappeared, even as his career has accelerated through Aberdeen and into Serie A with Bologna.
“I’ll tell you this; Lewis will play for Rangers before his career finishes. Absolutely no doubt about that,” he revealed.
“He’s maintained that from day one, that at some time in his career, he will come and play for Rangers. 100 per cent.”
Deal out of Rangers reach for now
However, the crucial distinction is timing, and, more importantly, finances.
McMurdo was open about the scale of interest Ferguson has attracted in recent years, with reported valuations and previous European interest placing him firmly beyond the typical reach of Scottish football’s financial structure.
“Last year, they couldn’t afford him because when we had Juventus and Napoli with offers on the table, they were talking about paying something in the region of €20-€25million,” he explained.
Even with McMurdo suggesting Ferguson’s value may have fluctuated.
This being due to squad rotation at Bologna, the gap between ambition and reality remains significant.
“If Rangers could make it happen and do a deal with Bologna, then I would love that,” he said.
“But I don’t know because of the money situation.”
The agent also admitted that, despite Ferguson’s personal connection to Rangers, the expectation internally has always been that his next moves would be dictated by Europe’s top leagues.
Rather than an emotional return to Scotland.
“I never thought at the time about Rangers for the simple reason that I didn’t think that Rangers would want to pay the money.”

Ferguson’s admiration for Rangers is genuine, and a future move is not ruled out in principle.
But at 26, he is in his prime and established in Serie A and with interest historically at Champions League-level valuations.
Any return to Ibrox is not a question of desire, but of economics and timing aligning in a way that, at present, remains unlikely.
