Norwich City have moved to end any lingering speculation over Kenny McLean’s future by tying the midfielder down to a new long-term deal at Carrow Road, effectively removing any prospect of a summer return to Rangers.

The Scotland international and Canaries captain has once again been central to Norwich’s plans.

Now his is importance has been recognised after being named the club’s Player of the Season.

This is the second time in three years he has won said award.

McLean’s future had regularly been the subject of external speculation given his consistent links with a return to his boyhood club Rangers.

A return to the club where he came through the academy before departing to build his senior career elsewhere.

Kenny McLean signs Norwich City extension

However, those suggestions can now be firmly parked after Phillipe Clement’s side agreed an extension that will keep the 34-year-old in England until 2028.

McLean himself had already hinted that his immediate future was not in doubt.

The former Aberdeen star having previously confirmed that an existing extension clause had already been triggered.

Now the latest agreement just adds further clarity.

As captain, McLean’s role extends beyond performances, with his presence in the dressing room and training ground viewed as a key component of the club’s leadership structure.

The extension also allows Norwich to plan for longer-term squad evolution.

With McLean expected to play a dual role in maintaining standards while helping guide emerging midfield talent through the pathway into the first team.

Kenny McLean has Rangers history

Rangers have often been loosely linked with a sentimental return for the midfielder due to his academy background.

Nonetheless, this latest commitment effectively removes him from the transfer conversation for the foreseeable future.

McLean has frequently spoken about his lifelong affinity for Rangers.

And even admitting it would be a dream come true to play for his childhood idols.

Although a formal transfer has never materialized and now looks as if it will never happen as he reaches his twilight footballing years.

Speaking previously, McLean spoke of the Glasgow divide and how he would react to the chance to play for Rangers.

“If you’re brought up and that’s who you support, then of course I would,” he revealed.

“My family would be over the moon.”

However, McLean remains firmly embedded at Carrow Road.

A stadium and a city where his influence continues to grow as Norwich aim to build around stability, experience and continuity rather than disruption ahead of the new campaign.

One they hope will end with a return to the English Premier League.

Kenny McLean set for World Cup with Scotland

McLean will head to the World Cup with Scotland after being named alongside Gers trio Liam Kelly, John Souttar and Findlay Curtis in Steve Clarke’s squad.

Connor Barron, who McLean would have competed with at Ibrox over a central midfield position, has missed out.

However, Rangers-bound Hearts skipper Lawrence Shankland has made the cut.

He will join up with the squad after he completes his Rangers medical this week.
