Lyon Interest In Rangers’ Youssef Chermiti Points To Valuation Decision

Rangers have been handed a fresh valuation test after Lyon reportedly added Youssef Chermiti to their striker shortlist.

According to Foot Mercato, the Ligue 1 side are closely following the Portuguese Under-21 international as they search for a new No.9 after Endrick’s loan spell ended.

The report claims discussions have started between the clubs and that Lyon could prepare an offer below €20m, including bonuses.

That figure should sharpen the conversation inside Ibrox, but Rangers must hold firm on this one.

Chermiti, 22, is under contract until 2029, and Foot Mercato cites his return of 15 goals and five assists in 41 games last season, with Transfermarkt currently listing his market value at €15m.

Unfortunately for Lyon, the reality is much different.

Strikers of Chermiti’s age, profile, and potential are valued at a much higher level, and they know it.

Why Rangers Must Maximise Potential Chermiti Sale

Derek McInnes has already spoken about building connection quickly in pre-season, but this is exactly the type of external pressure that can unsettle a rebuild if Rangers don’t control the narrative.

Chermiti’s original Rangers arrival from Everton was framed by the club around long-term benefit and upside.

The player also made clear in his first club interview that Rangers was the move he wanted, giving Ibrox a stronger emotional base than a regular transfer.

Still, Lyon’s interest changes the optics. Rangers have already been linked with major European interest around Chermiti this summer, including PSV, Porto and Galatasaray angles in earlier coverage.

A live Ligue 1 approach would turn that noise into a concrete market and valuation test.

Unless Lyon move significantly beyond the mooted sub-€20m package, Rangers’ strongest play is simple: hold the line, keep the player, and make the market pay properly for one of their few genuinely high-ceiling attacking assets.

Will Chermiti want to leave Rangers?

From the outside, it is unclear if the player is keen to leave after just one season, but the more links to different clubs that emerge, the more that appears likely.

After a slow start, like many at the club last season, Chermiti began to establish his credentials and show what he is about.

At 22, he is nowhere near his peak or full potential and that’s part of what interests suitors from the Top 5 leagues.

Rangers will be in no hurry for a sale, but money talks.

If a big money bid lands – upwards of £20m – an exit will happen and then the club must adequately source a replacement.

Hopefully, this won’t develop into a summer-long saga, but that’s the risk that Rangers will have to contend with.
