Rohl confirms major absence as Rangers prepare for St Mirren clash

Rangers boss Danny Rohl has offered an insight to his squad and who will be fit for Sunday’s trip to Paisley.

Rangers will face St Mirren after two gruelling matches against Celtic, both physically and emotionally.

The head coach confirmed that Mohamed Diomande will be unavailable for the trip to the SMISA Stadium but that “everyone else will be.”

Options increase

This means we could see the return of the long-term injured duo Connor Barron and Derek Cornelius, while Oliver Antman is also available after a short layoff.

Cornelius has been out since November with a muscle injury which required surgery.

His absence has allowed Emmanuel Fernandez to make the starting berth on the left-hand side of central defence his own.

But his return could allow Rohl to experiment with his shape and return to the three-at-the-back formation he favoured in his early weeks at Ibrox.

Antman has had a stop-start season, with the Finn finally coming into some form prior to his latest knock.

With Djeidi Gassama way off form having the former Go Ahead Eagles winger available from the bench would be a welcome boost to the German’s plans.

Still awaiting returns

Barron is less likely to feature, despite initial expectations that he could have returned in time for the Old Firm double header.

It now looks likely that we will not see the Scotland midfielder until April, despite Rohl’s comments today.

Bailey Rice remains sidelined and is likely to miss the remainder of the season after a serious knee injury picked up early in the campaign.

Despite a heart-breaking penalty defeat in the second Old Firm in succession and the ensuing chaos from the stands afterwards Rohl says that his side “have been really focused again and that “training has been good” maintaining his players are “ready to go again.”

Problems of their own

St Mirren have injury issues of their own with Mikael Mandron out with a shoulder injury alongside defender Marcus Fraser and Malik Dijksteel. Jonah Ayunga also doubtful.

The Buddies go into this match without a manager.

Stephen Robinson departed for Aberdeen during the week and Rohl will be up against reserve team coaching duo Craig McLeish and Jamie Langfield on Sunday.
