  • Today’s Rangers news as defeat to Hearts intensifies scrutiny on Danny Rohl amid mixed pundit opinions.
  • Alex McLeish backs Rohl, while Kevin Thomson questions leadership structure and identity.
  • Loan updates: Leon King offered deal, Ross McCausland exits, Findlay Curtis tipped for Rangers’ role.

Rangers fell to a calamitous defeat away to Hearts on Monday evening and the fallout has continued into Wednesday.

The job of head coach Danny Rohl has been in sharp discussion with contrasting opinions on his future emerging from former Ibrox heroes.

Here is today’s Rangers news.

Backing and dissent towards Danny Rohl

He has received backing from former Gers manager Alex McLeish.

The former Rangers boss, who managed the club for five years between 2001 to 2006 revealed he has been in contact with Fraser Thornton, who holds a seat on the Rangers board.

He recalled Thornton’s belief that the club have “got the right ideas and that they are headed in the right direction.”

McLeish believes there has to be trust in the Rangers hierarchy and that know what they are doing.

McLeish urged chairman Andrew Cavenagh to maintain his public support of the German in what is arguably the first time Rohl has been categorised as a manager under pressure.

He then went on to state: “And of course Danny had resurrected the team and got it back into a title race.”

However former Gers midfielder Kevin Thomson has called for a “figurehead” manager over a coach.

He recalled Walter Smith’s role during his time as an Ibrox player, while making comparisons to Celtic duo Brendan Rodgers and Ange Postecoglu.

Differing loan fortunes

Two out-on-loan Rangers academy graduates are set to have differing fortunes at the end of the season.

First up is today’s Rangers news about former youth starlet Leon King.

Ayr United have confirmed that they have offered a permanent contract to King, who’s Ibrox deal is up this summer.

King was full of praise for his time at Somerset Park.

“This is what I needed – to go out and play consistently this season,” he explained.

“The constant challenge of having to earn a spot in the team each week has been massive for me.

“I’m without a contract now so we’ll see what my future holds.

“But I’m not shutting the door on staying here.

“If something is on the table that is good for my future then I’ll look at it seriously.”

Meanwhile Ross McCausland has been told he has no further future with Aris Limmasol.

The Northern Irish winger will return to Ibrox after an “underwhelming” season in Cyprus.

Meanwhile former Gers right-back Alan Hutton has called for Findlay Curtis to be given a real opportunity at Ibrox this summer.

The winger will return from his loan spell with Kilmarnock at the end of the season.

“The big thing for him now is to finish the season well and go back to Rangers with a view of getting in the team,” said Hutton.

“Rangers are missing a core of Scottish players and that is a big problem at this moment in time.”

Barry Ferguson backs Bears to beat Celtic

Despite the recent defeat to Derek McInnes’s Jambos, former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has called for the club to end the season strongly.

He wants his former side to “go for nine points” from their final three fixtures.

Starting with a win at Celtic Park on Sunday to end the Hoops’ own title ambitions.

“You want to be finishing second,” said Ferguson.

“You’re going to Celtic and you want to put a dent into their title hopes as well.”

And there is recent precedent to draw from.

Rangers have won on their last two visits to Celtic Park.

A detail Ian Durrant believes should fuel belief rather than caution.

“We’ve won there the last twice, so let’s go and do it again,” said the nine-in-a-row Icon.

“What a pick-up it could be, especially if you beat Celtic.”
