Why Rangers cannot celebrate James Tavernier with a testimonial

Share

James Tavernier should not get a testimonial. Not because he did not dedicate a decade of service to Rangers, nor because he failed to contribute to some of the club’s biggest moments in recent years, but because the reality surrounding his departure has made any grand farewell feel impossible.

Ahead of the split, Tavernier confirmed he would leave Rangers this summer when his contract expires.

Under different circumstances, that announcement may have sparked reflection and appreciation for a player who captained the club through difficult times, delivered 55 and helped lead a run to a European final.

Instead, it has landed in the middle of complete collapse.

Rangers toxicity means James Tavernier must exit silently

The atmosphere around Rangers has become toxic following the post-split implosion that has potentially handed Celtic another Premiership title.

Three defeats from the opening three fixtures when five wins likely would have secured the league.

A slide into third place.

The prospect of Celtic reaching a record-breaking 56th title.

Supporters have simply had enough.

And fairly or unfairly, Tavernier has become the symbol of this entire era.

That is the burden captains carry at Rangers.

They receive the praise when things go well, but they also absorb the frustration when standards collapse over a prolonged period.

Tavernier now represents a decade that, outside of two standout campaigns, has been defined by repeated domestic failure, mental fragility and an inability to sustain success.

The highs and lows

The 2020/21 title-winning season under Steven Gerrard was exceptional, both from Tavernier individually and Rangers collectively.

The Europa League run the following campaign also created memories supporters will never forget.

For those two years, he looked every inch the modern Rangers captain.

But football memories are short when failure becomes repetitive.

Outside of those highs, Rangers have lurched from rebuild to rebuild under Tavernier’s leadership.

Managers have come and gone. Recruitment drives have failed. Title races have collapsed. Cup defeats have mounted.

Yet the same core issues remained year after year: a side unable to cope with pressure and incapable of consistently imposing itself domestically.

Eventually, the captain becomes inseparable from that culture.

Three years too late

In truth, Tavernier probably should have left when Connor Goldson departed.

Both looked physically exhausted and mentally drained by that point, and both likely would have walked away with the majority of the support wishing them well and appreciating their contributions overall.

Instead, Rangers allowed the cycle to continue.

Now Tavernier exits at the lowest point of his Ibrox career.

His performances have declined sharply, his defensive weaknesses are increasingly exposed, and every poor result intensifies supporter anger toward the leadership group that oversaw this period of regression.

Whether entirely justified or not, he will carry the blame for much of it.

That is why a testimonial does not feel appropriate.

Testimonials are built around celebration, affection and unity between player and supporters.

There is no unity around Tavernier now.

The fanbase is angry, fractured and desperate for wholesale change.

Many no longer see him primarily as the captain who stopped Celtic’s bid for ten-in-a-row, but as the face of a decade where Rangers repeatedly failed to capitalise on opportunities to dominate Scottish football.

Time may soften that perception. Distance often improves legacies.

Years from now, Tavernier may receive broader recognition for his numbers, his availability and the role he played in delivering one of the club’s most important league titles.

But right now, in the immediate aftermath of another collapse, emotions are too raw and the failures too fresh.

James Tavernier stayed too long, and in doing so, both Rangers and his own legacy have suffered for it.
